Man killed in bulldozer accident in Traphill
A man died in a bulldozer accident during construction work on a golf course in Traphill on Wednesday, July 17. In a statement sent to The Wilkes Record, Major Logan Kerr of the Wilkes County Sheriff's Office said that the accident was reported at 9:23 a.m., at 1365 Piney Grove Church Road.
Incumbents, newcomers in municipal races
Municipal election filing for Jonesville, East Bend and Boonville concluded on July 19 with incumbents as well as some newcomers filing for local town leadership. Incumbents on the Boonville Town Board, David Cox and Monica Craver filed for re-election. Also filing for the three open seats on that board are Jeffrey Jones, Zane Green and Kristin Johnson. Jonesville incumbents Tracy Wall, Regina Adkins and Michael Tilley filed for re-election. They are joined by Brandon McCann. There are three open seats on the Jonesville Town Council. In East Bend, Mayor James Dunn has filed for re-election as well as Commissioner Kurt Held. Also filing for the three seats on the town board are Dawn Nelson, Martin Hauser and Earl Norman. Municipal elections are non-partisan and will be on the November ballot in their respective precincts.

One critically injured, one trapped in Galax head-on collision
GALAX, Va. (WFXR) – The Galax Fire Department has reported a two-vehicle accident with multiple people injured on July 17. According to Galax FD, around 5:12 p.m. on Wednesday, crews from several departments arrived on Towers Road to find a head-on collision with one person trapped inside a vehicle and multiple injuries.
City votes to acquire PART lot
The city of Mount Airy is acquiring one of the largest public parking lots in town: a former park-and-ride facility near Big Lots. Galax man sentenced for April 2023 shooting death
CARROLL COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - A man from Galax has been sentenced to prison after shooting and killing another man in April 2023. 23-year-old Tyrus Miller was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and use of a firearm in commission of a felony in April 2024. Miller was originally charged with second-degree murder.
