Penn State Tight End Tyler Warren Tabbed to Mackey Award Watch List

Penn State tight end Tyler Warren is on the short list for a premier postseason award.

Warren has been named to the preseason watch list for the Mackey Award, given annually to the nation’s top tight end. His selection comes after tallying 34 receptions for 422 yards and a team-high seven touchdowns en route to a third-team All-Big Ten honor last season.

It was a big deal when Warren announced his return for a senior season, foregoing an early NFL Draft entry. And for good reason. Warren is arguably quarterback Drew Allar’s top receiving target in 2024, and his numbers should only improve with fellow tight end Theo Johnson now with the New York Giants.

In the Nittany Lions’ Peach Bowl loss to Ole Miss, Warren showed a glimpse of what an offense centered on him could look like. There he tallied a team-high 127 receiving yards, including a 75-yard bomb from Allar, and became the program’s first tight end to surpass 100 receiving yards in a game since Pat Freiermuth in 2020.

The 6-foot-6, 257-pound Warren will lead a youthful, yet promising Penn State tight end corps in 2024. Other tight ends anticipated to see playing time this fall include Khalil Dinkins, Andrew Rappleyea and Luke Reynolds, who was a five-star and the nation’s top tight end recruit this past cycle.

Warren is one of 10 Penn State players who have been tabbed to preseason watch lists. Other recognized Nittany Lions include Drew Allar (Davey O’Brien, Maxwell Award), Abdul Carter (Nagurski Trophy, Walter Camp Player of the Year Award), Nick Singleton (Doak Walker Award, Maxwell Award, Paul Hornung Award, Walter Camp Player of the Year Award), Kaytron Allen (Doak Walker Award), Nick Dawkins (Wuerffel Trophy), Tyler Duzansky (Mannelly Award), Sal Wormley (Outland Trophy), Riley Thompson (Ray Guy Award) and Chase Meyer (Lou Groza Award).
