Residents honored Memorial Day throughout the Mid-Valley on Monday, with events including a military flyover, bagpipes, and a color guard ceremony.

At Dallas Cemetery, Gold Star Father Kevin Wiens spoke about the loss of his son, Kory Wiens, who was killed along with his working dog, Cooper, in Iraq in 2007, and how he has found hope and comfort since.

Wiens creates flag-inspired 3D stars that he gives to veterans and neighbors in Dallas. He also volunteers with the U.S. War Dogs Association, which honors and supports military working dogs.

“Every day I find strength in remembering who Kory was, what he stood for and the legacy he left behind,” Wiens said.

American Legion Post 20 hosted the Dallas ceremony, which includes an Avenue of Flags. It’s the largest display in the area, with 830 American flags lining the cemetery lanes.

“Our country means everything to us and we’re grateful that those who have passed have been remembered,” said Shari Kelly, whose husband, Gordon, is a veteran. The couple, founders of Kelly’s Home Center, live at Dallas Retirement Village.

In Mt. Angel, Memorial Day events included a celebration of Mass by St. Mary Parish and a three-volley salute by the American Legion Honor Guard.or

American Legion Post 89 hosted the annual event at Calvary Cemetery.

Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, honors people who died while serving in the U.S. military.
