Interstate 5 will be under construction daily with nighttime closures between Kuebler Boulevard and Delaney Road beginning Sunday, the Oregon Department of Transportation said.

Crews will be working during the day, Monday through Friday, and there will be nighttime lane and shoulder closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday.

There will be nightly closures Sunday through Sept. 11 for the ramp from Delaney Road SE to Commercial Street SE and the northbound I-5 off-ramp Exit 249.

During these closures, I-5 traffic can take exit 252 onto Kuebler Boulevard to access Commercial Street SE and Delaney Road SE traffic can use Sunnyside Road SE to access Commercial Street SE.

The construction is part of a project to widen the freeway to help with southbound traffic congestion "when large trucks climb the hill between milepost 249.5 and 248.9 south of Salem."

Another phase, when funding becomes available, will widen the northbound I-5 lanes.

Drivers should be prepared for delays during the construction.

Then we can have 3 lanes of stopped traffic when the frequent crashes blocks them.
