Brian Quigley has resigned as Stayton mayor, the city announced Friday.

According to the city, Quigley stepped down immediately because of medical reasons. He made his intention to resign known Tuesday to City Manager Julia Hajduk.

"The City wishes to thank Mayor Quigley for his service and dedication to the City and hopes for a quick and thorough recovery," the release said.

Quigley was elected mayor in 2022 with over 70% of the vote. He assumed office in January 2023. Before the election, he served on the Stayton City Council from 2011 to 2019 and before that, served on the Planning Commission, Parks and Recreation Board and Charter Review Committee. He resigned as a city councilor in 2019.

Stayton City Council President Steve Sims will become acting mayor until the council appoints someone to fill the remainder of Quigley's term. That term ends in December 2026. The council will discuss the process to fill the vacancy in the next "several weeks," the release said.
