Crews on Thursday will begin preparing for the installation of new traffic surveillance cameras and variable message boards along 22 miles of Interstate 5 from north of Keizer to the Santiam River Rest Stop, according to an Oregon Department of Transportation alert.

The work will be done mostly during the day, and drivers can expect occasional delays, construction noise, and possible nighttime shoulder and lane closures, ODOT said.

The work is based on recommendations from the I-5 Optimization Project report to remove older signs and replace them with variable message signs and traffic congestion cameras and aims to address unreliable travel times, congestion and delays caused by crashes.

The variable message signs will be installed at southbound mileposts 262 (north of Perkins St. NE), 257 (south of Silverton Road NE), and 254 (near the Highway 22 onramp) and northbound milepost 240 (before the Santiam River Rest Stop).

The traffic congestion cameras will be installed at southbound milepost 249 (north of Delaney Road) and northbound mileposts 248 and 247 (in the Delaney Road/Enchanted Forest area).

The installation of the cameras is not expected to impact drivers, according to ODOT.
