UPDATE: NWS issued an update at 6:09 p.m. for Augusta County, Rockingham County and Harrisonburg: "The storm which prompted the warning has weakened below severe limits, and no longer poses an immediate threat to life or property. Therefore, the warning will be allowed to expire."

STAUNTON – Thunderstorms, damaging wind gusts, and heat illnesses might rain on the remaining Happy Birthday America Fourth of July festivities in Staunton.

According to a hazardous weather outlook sent at 4:35 p.m. from the National Weather Service, Augusta County, central Virginia, and Maryland are at risk of severe weather for the rest of the day.

“A few severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening,” reads the weather alert. “Damaging wind gusts are the primary threat. Isolated instances of flooding are possible as well. Hot and humid conditions are expected today. This could lead to an increased risk of heat illness for those outdoors.”

After the Fourth of July celebrations, there is an increased risk of heat illness from Friday through to next Wednesday.

“A Heat Advisory is in effect for areas along and east of the I-81 [corridor] from noon to 8 p.m. Friday,” reads the alert. “Hot and humid conditions will likely continue into Saturday.”

Scattered severe thunderstorms are possible Saturday afternoon and evening, bringing potential “isolated instances” of flooding.
