STAUNTON – Over Sunday night, Greenville Avenue in Staunton closed to traffic.

Columbia Gas of Virginia closed the road to work on nearby gas lines. According to a Facebook post from Staunton, Greenville Avenue closures could happen “several more times” as the project continues for the next month.

The road will be closed each night for the next week as the current phase of the project under the railroad tracks progresses.

“The section of roadway closed is small, but the location makes for a rather long detour,” reads the post about Sunday night's closure. “You will not be able to leave Downtown Staunton on Greenville Ave. and turn right under the underpass, or come from Commerce and make a left to go on Greenville Ave. under the underpass, or drive south on Coalter onto Greenville under the underpass.”

Instead, the city recommended driving through Middlebrook Avenue to leave town.

Future closures will change the detour, depending on where work is scheduled. Another phase will close Greenville Avenue and State Street from Mill Street to N. Coalter Street.

This is not the only reason Greenville Avenue has been closed recently. On Saturday, a water line broke on Greenville between New Street and Coalter Street.

Another post from the city reads, "Big thank you to everyone for their patience and a big thank you to Staunton Public Works. Crews fixed the break around 3 pm. They were able to do it without shutting off water."
