An 18-year-old teenager passed away after jumping into an "electrified lake" in Virginia.

According to an article from The Mirror US, the Bedford County Sheriff's Office has identified the teenager as Jesse Hamric, who is from Colorado. Hamric was with friends and family at a Fourth of July gathering at Smith Mountain Lake at a private home with a dock when the incident occurred.

Two of his friends noticed Hamric was in distress after he jumped into the lake. They entered the lake in an attempt to help him but also started to feel shocked. They were able to pull Hamrick out of the water and begin CPR. However, he tragically died later at a hospital.

An investigation is ongoing and the official cause of death has not been determined yet. Police think that Hamric and the two friends were electrocuted in the water, which can happen when "faulty wiring on boats or docks releases energy into the lake."

According to The Mirror US, Hamric had recently graduated from Steamboat Springs High School and the school held a prayer vigil for him.

Condolences go out to those impacted by this death.
