This Small Minnesota Town Loves Their Baseball
Freeport is a small town in Central Stearns County in Oak Township with a population of 632. Freeport's water tower with a smiley face greets travelers along I-94 daily. Freeport wasn't always called Freeport. When the community initially settled in the late 1890s the settlement was called Oak Station. The name changed due to confusion over a town to the west along the same railroad line because Osakis sounded too similar. Freeport, Minnesota is named after Freeport, Illinois. There is also a Freeport, Wisconsin too.
Parade Behavior Guidelines Heading Into Granite City Days
The Granite City Days Parade will take place Saturday starting at 10 a.m. Granite City Days Co-Chairs Alisa Schmidt and Marci Sussenguth joined me on WJON. Schmidt says the parade will include approximately 70 units which includes marching bands. She says those handing out candy are instructed to under hand the candy to the curb and not at spectators. The expectation is that all floats will be family friendly. Schmidt says they keep the units that have music separated. If any of these units have animals they are required to clean up after them. She says all of their parade float entries are aware of these requirements.

Commission Names Candidates To Fill Seventh District Vacancies
ST. PAUL (WJON News) -- The Commission on Judicial Selection has made five recommendations for the two vacant seats in the Seventh Judicial District. The five candidates are Amy Chantry a judicial referee in the Tenth Judicial District, Simon George the managing attorney for the Seventh Judicial District's Public Defender's Office, Clay County Attorney's Office assistant attorney Michael Leeser, Seventh Judicial District assistant public defender Michael Minard, and Ole Tvedten head of Stearns County Attorney's Office's Criminal Division.
