Schutt reappointed to Permanent Fund board
Gov. Mike Dunleavy has reappointed Ethan Schutt to the Alaska Permanent Fund Board of Trustees, where he serves as the current chairman. This move allays concerns by some that if he was not reappointed, trustee Ellie Rubenstein might ascend to the chairmanship of Alaska’s $80 billion investment account. She has been identified as having conflicts of interest with her own investment groups and that of her father, Carlyle Group’s founder David Rubenstein.
Before he made the big leagues, Marshall Boze made Alaska history with 21 strikeouts in 1988
Before he became the first Alaskan to play Major League Baseball, Marshall Boze had a different claim to fame. He recorded 21 strikeouts, and amazingly lost the game. In 1988, the Kenai Twins’ rocket right-hander threw a three-hitter in eight innings and broke the state’s all-time strikeout record in a 6-1 setback to the East T-birds in Game 12 of the Legion State Tournament at Mulcahy Stadium.
One lane of Seward Highway reopened after fatal crash at mile 114
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Anchorage Police have reported one person is dead following a two-vehicle crash near Mile 114 on the Seward Highway Saturday. A social media post from the Anchorage Police Department posted around noon stated a serious injury vehicle crash occurred just south of the weigh scales on the Seward. An update posted at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday said that a Kia traveling northbound crossed the center line and struck a Ford F150 pickup truck traveling southbound in the opposite the lane. The driver of the Kia was declared deceased at the scene, and both occupants of the pickup truck were transported to an Anchorage hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
July 4th Means Freedom for Humpback Whale Near Valdez, Alaska
NOAA and the U.S. Coast Guard worked together this 4th of July to free an entangled humpback whale in the Port of Valdez, Prince William Sound. The NOAA Fisheries Alaska Marine Mammal Stranding Hotline received numerous reports late afternoon on July 3. A young humpback whale was entangled in the middle of the Port of Valdez, near Allison Point and the new harbor. The animal was believed to have multiple wraps of line around the base of its tail and was trailing a bright yellow buoy. A U.S. Coast Guard Station Valdez boat crew launched to get eyes on the situation to pass along observations to NOAA experts to determine the severity of the entanglement. The information and photos they collected from a safe distance, along with members of the public, were vital in enabling the NOAA entanglement experts and partners to create a rescue plan.
Grow North Farm Raises Urban Produce for Immigrant Entrepreneurs
Mountain View’s Grow North Farm provides space for immigrants to learn what grows well in Alaska’s climate, as well as to try growing foods from their homeland here. Grow North Farm, a project of Anchorage Community Land Trust and Catholic Social Services, launched its sixth season last week with a Thursday Grow North Marketplace. Its farm stand will operate through the summer from 4 to 7 p.m. on weekdays.
The Fairbanks animal shelter is overwhelmed with surrendered dogs
The Fairbanks North Star Borough Animal Shelter is at capacity for dogs, with limited options for those that can’t be adopted out quickly. Earlier this week, a chorus of barks and cries coming from dogs looking for new homes filled the shelter’s kennel rooms. The facility is seeing at least twice as many dogs being dropped off as adopted out, said shelter operations supervisor Kimberly Imbert.

Texas man dies on river rafting trip near Bethel
BETHEL, Alaska (KTUU) - The Department of Public Safety (DPS) has reported that a Texas man was killed in a boating accident on a remote river near Bethel on Friday. A DPS dispatch says that Alaska State Troopers were notified of a boating fatality on June 19 at 6:21 p.m. The fatality occurred around 53 miles Southeast of Bethel during a remote river rafting trip. Troopers did not indicate which river the incident occurred on.
Two black bears euthanized in downtown Juneau
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game euthanized two black bears in downtown Juneau on Wednesday evening after they displayed aggressive behavior around garbage cans. Wildlife management biologist Carl Koch said he initially responded to reports of a yearling that was entering shops, including a jewelry store on South Franklin Street.
