    Pickup attempts to pass on curve causing crash near Stella, 8 rushed to hospitals

    NEWTON COUNTY, Mo. (KOAM) — This past Saturday afternoon about 3:30 p.m. reports of a serious head on crash near Stella, Mo. alerted Newton County Central Communications.

    Stella Fire, Newton County Deputies, Newton County Ambulance responded. Missouri State Highway Patrol were notified.

    MSgt C. Clark states in his preliminary report 8 people were rushed to area hospitals by ambulance or helicopter.

    17-year old male from Diamond, Mo. was driving a 2001 Dodge Ram. He attempted to pass on a curve, and collided with a 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan driven by Kelly Sweeney, 39, of Washburn, Mo.

    Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KOAM’s Shannon Becker on the scene, after the crash both vehicles caught fire. No one was injured by flames.

    “[Pickup] attempted to pass another vehicle while going into a curve. [Pickup] observed [Minivan] and steered left in an attempt to avoid a collision and [Minivan] steered to the right. [Pickup] traveled off the west side of the roadway and [Minivan] traveled partially off the west side of the roadway. The front of [Pickup] then struck the front of [Minivan].”

    Six people were in the minivan and two in the pickup. One of the injured was flown to Springfield. Another unknown was flown to Joplin. All others transported by ground ambulance.

    Names are released of those involved. Juvenile names are withheld as Missouri State Highway Patrol policy. The report is included in this article.

    Metro Towing removed the crashed vehicles and debris. The roadway was closed a little over two hours.
