Opinion: Being Biden at 80, America’s Oldest President

    2023-06-05

“You say I’m ancient? I say I’m wise,” President Biden told reporters at a White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Since his most recent fall, many wonder if he has the physical capacity to maintain the role of America’s leader.

And at the Air Force Academy a few days ago, Biden joked that “when I was graduating from high school 300 years ago, I applied to the Naval Academy.” After tripping on the sandbag, he sought to laugh that off too. “I got sandbagged,” he said. — The New York Times.

Polls across America indicate his age is the top concern of voters. I’m sure many Republicans worry about Trump’s age as well. Why do we continuously nominate or elect men (some might also ask why we keep electing men instead of giving a woman a chance) well past the age they should be home gardening or out fishing somewhere instead of holding the keys to weapons that could annihilate the world.

President Joe Biden has achieved an unusual distinction in the annals of American history, celebrating his 80th birthday while still in office, making him the oldest president in American history. As we reflect on this milestone, let's consider some of the issues and questions it raises.

Should you hold the nuclear keys when you can't remember how many grandchildren you have

Many have questioned the wisdom of entrusting the codes that could launch a nuclear war to a man who sometimes seems to struggle with his memory.

However, it's crucial to understand that the presidency is not a solo endeavor. It is a massive undertaking, aided by advisors, intelligence agencies, and the vast infrastructure of the federal government. Biden’s years of experience in the political arena undoubtedly equip him with the wisdom to make informed decisions, even amidst the occasional memory lapses that come with age.

Biden has given 25% fewer media interviews than Trump did

Comparing Biden with his predecessor reveals some interesting contrasts.

During his tenure, Trump seemed to thrive in the media limelight, frequently hosting impromptu press conferences and engaging in publicized social media battles.

In contrast, Biden has adopted a more traditional approach to media engagement, providing fewer interviews and leaning into a less flamboyant communication style. This does not necessarily reflect poorly on his leadership but demonstrates a different approach to the media that aligns more with pre-Trump presidency norms.

Trump is only four years younger than Biden

Despite their age, both Biden and Trump have demonstrated remarkable tenacity in office.

Trump, known for his tax cuts, judicial appointments, and deregulation, showcased a high-paced, aggressive style of governance. On the other hand, Biden has been praised for handling the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, efforts towards climate change, and infrastructure spending.

Both men have shown that age does not necessarily inhibit the capacity to lead and bring about significant changes.

Should an upper age limit be placed on the Presidency as there is a minimum age?

The question of an upper age limit for the presidency is complex and delicate.

On the one hand, cognitive decline is a genuine concern in the elderly, potentially impacting decision-making capabilities. On the other hand, placing an upper age limit could rob the nation of the benefits of seasoned leaders with years of experience and wisdom.

In conclusion, age should not solely determine a person's capacity to lead. Being Biden at 80 symbolizes the triumph of experience and maturity.

Ultimately, the choice of leadership should always remain with the people, who must weigh the merits of experience against the energy of youth. At this point, it should be left to the electoral process and the voters.
