Photo/Mike Williams By Mike Williams news@breckenridgeamerican.com Four Stephens County 4-H students brought home state titles last week while competing in Range & Pasture Grass Identification and Range Evaluation contests at the Texas 4-H Roundup. Josiah Moreno, Kason Burchett, Aiden Boulevard and Issac Tait all represented the county in both contests June 3-6 at Texas A&M University. In the Range & Pasture Grass Identification contest Tuesday, June 4, the team took first overall.Moreno was named reserve champion as an individual in the competition. The team earned a second state title with a first place team finish in the Range Evaluation contest Wednesday, June 5. Moreno won state champion, while Burchett took fifth place, Boulevard took sixth place and Tait earned seventh place. Each 4-H participant received a belt buckle at the awards ceremony following the contests.Both competitions were taught by Jerry Corbett. “They went to 14 contests this year all over the state,” Corbett said. “They went 17-3. Those three losses were second places. We also have a junior team. Seven of those have beaten members of the senior team. …They’re doing really well.” After returning home, the team was recognized by the Stephens County Commissioners Court during their meeting Monday, June 10. “We honor sports, we light the courthouse green and they light the B and all of that stuff, but your accomplishments are just as important as anything else,” County Judge Michael Roach said. “(This) is even more important when it comes to life skills, so kudos.” Corbett said all of the contests the team participates in are statewide with the exception for the Stephens County Junior Livestock Show. The teams they compete against are champions in their home areas. Texas 4-H is open to children and teenagers aged from five years old to 18, it is part of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.
