Cavalier bats kept under wraps as Stephenson prevails over STAA

    2024-05-21

MARINETTE — Chase Monette and Sam Salo kept the Saint Thomas Aquinas Academy baseball team off-balance to help Stephenson upend the Cavaliers 6-1 on Saturday.

Monette and Salo combined to toss seven innings of two-hit ball while Trenton Salfi and Lucas Havelka aided the Eagles’ cause with matching two-RBI performances on the afternoon.

Stephenson put the Cavaliers behind the eight ball from the first inning after Beau Maule crossed home plate on an error before Monette and Bryce Kass both scored to make it a 3-0 contest.

An RBI-single off the bat of Jake Farley trimmed STAA’s deficit down to two, but Stephenson’s offense continued to stay on the attack in the top of the sixth, with Nate Klein scoring on walk issued to Salo, while a two-run single by Salfi lifted the Eagles out to a 6-1 advantage.

Tug Paidl worked a walk to get on base before another free pass issued to Brady Koesling gave the Cavaliers a runner in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but Dakota Yother and Henry Piasecki went down on back-to-back strikes from Monette to end the inning.

STAA was able to get another runner into scoring position in the bottom of the seventh after Teagan Anderson socked a two-out double, but Salo set down Calvin Peters on strikes to get Stephenson out of the jam.

Salo covered the seventh inning and collected a pair of strikeouts in the process. Monette was the winning pitcher with one hit, one earned run, eight walks and three punchouts across six innings of work.

Stephenson out-hit the Cavaliers by an 8-2 margin, with Monette collecting a pair of base knocks, while Salfi, Maule, Havelka, Kass and Klein all had one hit each.

Anderson and Farley picked up STAA’s two hits. Hunter Brief walked twice. Farley, Brief and Yother all had one stolen base.

Yother was saddled with the loss on the mound after giving up six hits, five runs, only one of which was earned, and four walks against four strikeouts through five-and-one-third innings pitched.
