Lady Eagles finish second at abbreviated Skyline meet

    2024-05-23

STEPHENSON — Mother Nature wreaked havoc on Tuesday’s Skyline Conference track and field meet in Stephenson.

Heavy rains and strong winds settled over the Herbert Corey Sports Complex midway through Tuesday’s action, forcing the 12 teams to seek shelter.

Hopes of resuming competition quickly faded as the skies continued to pour, and officials made the difficult decision to call off the remainder of the events.

With 11 of the 17 boys events and seven left to score on the girls’ side, the winners were determined using the results of the events that were completed.

The Stephenson girls took second place overall with 54 points, while the boys settled for ninth place with 10 points.

Bark River-Harris captured the girls’ Skyline Conference championship with 75 points. Forest Park was third with 42 points, while Carney-Nadeau (32) and North Dickinson (24) rounded out the top-five.

Munising won the boys’ Skyline crown after collecting 72 points, nearly 20 points ahead of runner-up Bark River-Harris (54).

Forest Park took third with 48 points. Rapid River (38) was fourth while North Central (19) was fifth.

The Lady Eagles brought home two conference championships.

Faith Cappaert edged Forest Park’s Vienna Price by two seconds to win the 1,600-meter run in 5:44.0 before teaming with Kayela Putnam, Jada Kuntze and Morgan Bergquist to cruise to first place in the 3.200m relay.

The Stephenson quartet notched a time of 11:00.02, nearly 11 seconds faster than the North Dickinson contingent of Mya Grunland, Aubrey Applekamp, Jessica Harwath and Raina Ledzian, who took second after crossing the finish line in 11:10.94.

Mattie Prestin, Madalynn Vista, Lilliana Revall and Adria Ruleau saw success in both the 400m and 800m relays, placing second in the 800m (1:59.88) and third in the 400m (56.29).

Carney-Nadeau’s Samantha Kedsch defended her long jump conference title with a leap measuring 16 feet, 10 inches, which was a new personal-best.

Mariska Laurila seized her second straight Skyline championship in the discus with a toss of 101’ 5”.

Laurila and Kedsch paired with Kelsie Smith and Ashlie Topper to nab second place in the 400m relay with a time of 55.54 seconds.

On the boys’ side, Stephenson’s Canon Kuntze ran a fourth-place time of 5:01.40 in the 1,600m run, establishing a new personal-best in the process.

Asher Priebe added a pair of top-five finishes for the Eagles, placing fourth in the 110m hurdles (18.38) and fifth in the 100m-dash (12.59).
