Art center welcomes Potters Guild installment, Japanese-inspired work
If you drop by the Kenai Art Center this month, you may find yourself surrounded by varying iterations of clay teapots in the main gallery. The exhibit is part of the Kenai Potters Guild’s annual “Clay on Display'' installation. Each year, that installation challenges potters with a different theme that aims to highlight the diverse art form. This year’s theme is on teapots.
Siam Noodles and Food expands to Kenai
When the owner of Kenai’s Thai Town restaurant announced her retirement roughly two months ago, Siam Noodles and Food acted swiftly. The Soldotna-based restaurant has considered expanding to Kenai for a while now, hoping to serve more people on the peninsula. The two restaurants are owned by the same family, so Thai Town’s closure seemed like a perfect opportunity for Siam to expand.

The Delaney Park Strip was gleaming with rainbows and glitter as crowds gathered on Saturday for the annual Anchorage Pride Parade. Dozens of booths were set up to sell art, clothes and trinkets while others distributed information about queer support services in and around the city. A parade of hundreds circled downtown, with people dancing, cheering and waving rainbow flags. Participants walked, danced, drove and rollerbladed their way through the street to fun music and massive cheers.
Anchorage Mayor LaFrance announces 6 new executive hires
Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance has announced six new executive appointments. In a statement, LaFrance said Barbara Jones will be deputy chief of staff. Jones previously served as Anchorage municipal clerk before retiring last year. She has also worked as the municipal ombudsman and as executive director and staff attorney for the Anchorage Equal Rights Commission. Jones joins LaFrance’s previously announced chief of staff Katie Scovic.

Last week, Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy signed this year’s state budget into law, including a one-time funding boost of about $175 million to school districts. The Juneau School District gets a $5.2 million slice of that. But this money comes months after the Juneau Board of Education controversially voted to consolidate schools and reduce staff to offset a multi-million dollar deficit.
