STERLINGTON, La. ( KTVE/KARD ) — Even though summer officially began last week, temperatures have been on the rise for quite some time now.

Many people are not aware of the risks that certain medications pose in relation to heat injury. Pharmacist Michelle Goldman at Community Pharmacy of Sterlington says that patients should always speak with their doctor or pharmacist about the medicine they are taking before going out to enjoy a hot summer day.

“Most people are not aware of all their medications,” Goldman says. “Even just being outside with the sun and the heat is why it’s important to talk to your doctor or your pharmacist, especially about what they’re on.”

Not only can prescribed medications have this impact, but over-the-counter medicines and supplements can as well.

There are certain medications that Goldman recommends patients look out for.  Several classes of antibiotics and blood pressure medicines, such as thiazide diuretics, can cause extreme sensitivity to your skin.

It is also important to store medicine in an adequate location away from heat, as too much exposure can cause pills to deactivate or chemically change.

Goldman recommends patients drink plenty of fluids, wear sunscreen, and stay in the shade as much as possible to avoid heat injury.
