By Steven Bonifazi / NewsBreak Denver

(DENVER, Colo.) Hello and welcome to another Monday edition of the Denver Daily Roundup.

Today is Monday, May 16. Hopefully, everyone had a pleasant and relaxing weekend.

While the weather this weekend was dry and warm, Denver is set to see a chance of showers and thunderstorms Monday. The high temperature will reach near 86.

Let's take a closer look at a few of the top and local stories from in and around the Denver metro you should be aware of this Monday:

    1. Denver increases COVID-19 community level to Medium coronavirus cases rise

Denver raised its COVID-19 community-level risk to medium Friday amid two sub-variants of the omicron causing cases statewide to rise.

Denver7 reports Denver Department of Public Health and Environment (DDPHE) officials said Friday that residents should take more precautions as cases per 100,000 people are now above 200. The city's one-week incident rate of cases per 100,000 people was 209 as of Friday, according to city-data

COVID-19 hospitalizations are also anticipated to rise over the next few weeks, as state data shows the BA.2 sub-variant of omicron now accounts for roughly three-quarters of all infections in the state currently.

    2. Aloft hotel in downtown Denver to remain occupied by homeless

    (Aloft)

Downtown Denver's Aloft hotel will remain a shelter for the city's homeless at risk for COVID-19 through the end of 2022.

Denver City Council will consider on Monday spending $13.3 million to house 140 people at the hotel from July through December, or $13,300 per day for 140 rooms at $95 per night, according to NewsBreak Denver's David Heitz. The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless will offer case management and mental health services at the hotel while the Salvation Army will operate as shelter administrator.

Aloft is not the only hotel Denver's homeless occupy. Colorado Coalition for the homeless recently obtained 113 units at a La Quinta, marking the number of beds in Denver for those at risk of contracting COVID-19 at 563.

    4. Denver Animal Shelter hosts kitten and puppy 'shower,' aims to reverse trend of owners surrendering pets

Many people who chose to adopt a pet during the COVID-19 pandemic are now surrendering those pets at shelters as restrictions lift and life returns to normal.

According to CBS Denver, Denver Animal Shelter decided to host a kitten and puppy shower to help care for the influx of animals in need. In the first four months of 2019, pet owners dropped off 257 animals, according to the shelter. In 2022, the shelter has taken in 421 animals already.

At the kitten and puppy shower, the shelter collected funds, gifts and supplies and sought people willing to foster an animal so that the shelter has more room to take in animals in need. The shelter is also seeking people who might want to adopt.
