Officials investigate 'suspicious fire' in Stevens County
STEVENS COUNTY, Wash. - Fire officials are investigating a "suspicious" small brush fire that burned south of Springdale. Stevens County Fire District 1 responded to a .35-acre brush fire in a dry underbrush with fallen trees. Due to brief winds carrying embers, firefighters reported minor torching and three spot fires. Avista was contacted due to the fire's proximity to high-voltage feeder lines.
48 animals rescued, 3 dead from animal cruelty incident in Colville
STEVENS COUNTY, Wash. — 42 cats and six dogs were rescued from an animal cruelty incident near Colville. The Stevens County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) responded to the report of a possible animal cruelty situation on May 31. SCSO said after they received a search warrant, deputies found 48 animals in poor health and filthy indoor conditions.
Car Accidents Still Under Investigation
On Thursday, June 27, a Stevens County man died in an accident in Valley, WA, according to the Washington State Patrol (WSP). At approximately 1:45 p.m, 59 year old Brian Gilbert was traveling northbound on Highway 231 when his vehicle left the roadway, striking two signposts and a utility pole. Gilbert was pronounced deceased at the scene. WSP is still investigating the accident but says they suspect a medical situation may have been the cause.
Stevens County Conservation District's Fire Safety Initiatives
The Stevens County Conservation District (SCCD), in partnership with the Colville National Forest and the Three Rivers Ranger District, brought a Fire Safety talk and Smokey Bear to Evergreen Elementary School in Gifford WA on Thursday June 6. The 37 students learned about ways to practice fire safety at school, at home, and outdoors.

Grizzly Bear Spotted Near Chewelah
The Stevens County Sheriff’s Office informed the public on June 7 that a bear was observed breaking into a chicken coop north of Chewelah on the morning of June 2.
