A 28-year-old Portage County inmate who was on a court-authorized furlough is on the run and being sought by police, according to a news release issued Monday.

Police say Matthew J. Garsomke was released at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 28 for a three-hour furlough for a specific purpose and location. He was due back at the Portage County Jail at 1:30 p.m. Friday and did not appear.

Officials have not provided the reason the furlough was granted.

Garsomke was last seen at about 10:35 a.m. Friday walking away from the jail northbound on Strongs Avenue in Stevens Point. He is described as a white man who is 6’01” tall, weighing 203 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. He was last seen wearing a blue sweatshirt, white t-shirt, gray shorts, and blue shoes.

Court records show Garsomke was being held on a $1,500 cash bond ordered in a burglary and theft case, with a plea and sentencing hearing set for July 12.

If anyone has information on the whereabouts of Matthew Garsomke, they should contact the Portage County Sheriff’s Office at 715-346-1400.
