WESTON – Lucas Hager tossed a complete game and Wausau scored five runs late to defeat Stevens Point 6-3 in its opening game of a Class AAA American Legion baseball regional on Wednesday at Simon Field at D.C. Everest High School.
Luke Somogoleski tripled and scored on a Dylan Dobratz single in the first inning to give Wausau a quick 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs tacked on two more runs in the fifth as Dobratz scored on an error following a single by Jesse Osness, and Jackson Albee knocked in a run with a single, pushing their lead to 3-0.
Stevens Point came back with two in the top of the sixth before Wausau scored three times in the bottom of the frame, adding some much-needed insurance. Two runs scored on an error following a bunt by Oliver Turjaski. Turjaski scored on a groundout by Smogoleski.
Hager finished off the complete game, striking out three with two walks, three runs and seven hits allowed as Wausau (15-21) moves on to a winners’ bracket game against Marshfield (17-18) at 7 p.m. Thursday.
