STEVENSVILLE — An annual tradition, the Blessing of the Fleet, once again prayed each vessel would find safe harbor at the end of their day’s work. Twenty-three boats participated in this season’s service led by Pete McArdle. First mate of the Chasin’ Tail, Stephanie Shields sang the National Anthem and guest singer Allison Gardner performed Amazing Grace. Those gathered heard Jeff and Diane Ruth share their fond memories of Kentmorr Marina.

Located on the west side of Kent Island, the marina is just minutes from the Bay Bridge with quick access to Middle Bay and Eastern Bay. During the season these fishing charter boat captains make numerous trips across these waters.

On May 3, as tradition dictates, each vessel was announced, captain and mate, and stopped before Pastor Bob Timms for their individual blessing before passing under the arch of water sprayed by volunteer crewed fire boats from Kent Island and United Communities fire departments.

The Blessing of the Fleet is a centuries-old maritime tradition honoring the captains, crews and vessels that currently work the waters and honors and remembers those who worked the waters.
