STEVENSVILLE — What does snakehead fishing, towing boats, and being an Eagle Scout have to do with pageantry? Rising senior at Kent Island High School, Madison Mitchell is the answer.

At 17-years-old, Madison is already an active member of her community. She is a junior member of the American Legion Auxiliary where she organizes and carries out events like the Mother’s and Father’s Day Brunches. Madison also is a founding member of the KI Scouts of America chapter, where she has earned over 60 merit badges. Her Eagle Scout project provided six pressure-treated benches to the Blue Heron Nature Preserve. In addition, Madison also loves fishing and is a part of the KI Fisherman’s Club where she helps with events like the Fishing Flea Market for about 2,800 people. She also stays busy with tutoring, babysitting, and school.

Excitement came in the mail when Madison received an invitation for an open call for the National American Miss Contest. Madison shares, “I’m trying to get more out of my comfort zone. When I got the open call, I wanted to try.” Two days after her open call, Madison found out she was a State Finalist for the National American Miss Pageant for 16-18 year olds.

While many beauty pageants focus on judging outward physical appearances, the National American Miss Pageant organization focuses on “creating future leaders and equipping them with real-world skills to make their dreams a reality. The program is based on inner beauty, as well as poise and presentation, and offers an ‘All-America’ spirit of fun for family and friends.”

Her father, Mike Mitchell, describes Madison as “a good kid who is shy and close with her family. She has been a leader in her Eagle Scouting [program] and is well organized with structuring events, programs, and event coordinating. She has great follow-through.”

Madison shines through her community service as she received many awards to date including a Governor’s Citation for “outstanding services for the citizens of [Maryland], a Congressional award for service, as well as many Eagle Scout awards. She even has her own day: “Eagle Scout Madison Mitchell Day” in November.

Now, Madison prepares for the State Pageant on Aug. 17-19, in Reston, VA. Events will include a formal wear competition, an interview, a personal introduction, as well as optional pay-to-participate events that include Top Model Search, Runway Model, Casual Wear, and Talent event, Photogenic event, and more. As one of the only QAC finalists, she hopes that this experience will not only take her “out of her comfort zone but will also boost her confidence and public speaking.” In the near future, Madison aspires to encourage “youth empowerment and support those in need.” If she wins, Madison says she would, “visit school field days to volunteer, read books to local schools, and donate [her] time to community events.” In the farther off future, Madison plans to get her degree in Early Childhood Education with a minor in Psychology to become a kindergarten teacher.

Madison already has two sponsors; special thanks to American Legion Auxiliary 278 and Bay Life Apparel. But, there are many costs to participate. Some of these costs include $650 sponsorship fee, the yearbook buy in, wardrobe, transportation, and hotel costs. With dresses ranging from $100-$500, Madison has a goal of $600 to raise for the August pageant.
