Rockton’s 2nd Summerpalooza of year finishes, next on way
ROCKTON, Ill. (WIFR) - Downtown Rockton finishes its second Summerpalooza event of the year, but more is in stock. “Anything that brings people down is good, you know, you get more foot traffic,” said Tierra Polfliet, owner of Inkwell Books and Threads in Rockton. “People who might not just normally be coming to Rockton might come for the event, and then we stay open late so they can check us out.”
IDPH, DNR And Rock Island Area Health Authorities Investigating Gastrointestinal Disease That Sickened At Least 12 People
The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Illinois Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are working with public health authorities in Rock Island and Iowa to investigate an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis, a gastrointestinal disease, in persons helping at a Rock Island County wildlife rehabilitation facility. Public health officials said at least 12 individuals have been identified with probable or confirmed disease following contact with raccoons at Pat’s Bandits in Hillsdale. The people are residents of Iowa and from four counties in Illinois.

CHICAGO (AP) — Storms spawning multiple tornado reports blew through Iowa, Illinois — including Chicago — and Indiana on Monday, downing trees and power poles and cutting power to more than 460,000 customers and businesses. A woman in Indiana died after a tree fell onto a home, authorities said.
Severe weather slams central Illinois, again
For the second time in as many nights, damaging winds caused widespread damage and power outages. The storms Monday night resulted in staggering wind gusts. A corn crib was destroyed by a 105 mile per hour wind gust near Camp Grove in Marshall County. South Pekin clocked a 78 mile per hour wind gust, Elmwood 71 mph and Lewistown 70 mph. Wind gusts of 60 to 70 miles per hour were common over most of the area. Several communities reported wind damage with the main problem being trees and tree limbs knocking down power lines and causing roads and streets to be blocked. We’ll get a better idea of damage when it’s daylight. The Monday night storms hit as some communities were cleaning up from storms Sunday night which caused damage in Henry and Bloomington.

DeKalb, IL – NIU’s Gretel Mercado, a doctoral student in physics, has won a prestigious graduate student research award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
