ROSEVILLE — Despite tightening the gap in the second half, Stillwater was never able to catch Roseville before falling 85-76 in a Suburban East Conference boys basketball game on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at Roseville Area High School.

It snapped a three-game winning streak for the Ponies (5-9 SEC, 11-11), who received a game-high 22 points from Henry Zollar.

Kellen Little delivered 18 points to lead the Raiders (7-7, 13-9) while teammates Ataa-Adjetey Mensah added 15 and Micah Wiskus chipped in with 12.

Stillwater trailed 43-35 at halftime, but closed within three points during the second half. Roseville did not let up and the Ponies were unable to pull even.

“We made a push to cut it to a one-possession game, but when we had opportunities to close that last game we just were never able to do that,” Ponies coach Brady Hannigan said. “Either they did something like hit a tough shot or we’d make a mistake, but we were never able to get over that hump and it would go from three or four back to double digits.”

The 85 points are the most Stillwater has allowed in a game this season.

Stillwater is scheduled to host East Ridge in a conference game on Friday, Feb. 16. The Ponies defeated the Raptors (12-2, 14-7) earlier this season, which has contributed to them trailing Cretin-Derham Hall (13-1, 16-4) by one game in the SEC standings. East Ridge has won 10 straight conference games, including a victory over Cretin-Derham Hall, since falling to the Ponies 59-57 on Jan. 3.

“They’re a very talented team,” Hannigan said.

At New Brighton, outside shooting hampered the Ponies but sparked Irondale before eventually falling to Stillwater 72-67 in a conference game on Friday, Feb. 9 at Irondale High School.

It marked Stillwater’s first victory at Irondale since the Knights joined the SEC in 2019.

The Knights (0-14 SEC, 2-20) are still seeking their first conference victory, but they pushed Stillwater down the stretch. Irondale pulled within 67-64 in the final minute five free throws in the final 30 seconds helped provide some breathing room before the Knights sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

“They played tough,” Ponies coach Brady Hannigan said. “This is one of the better games they’ve played.”

Irondale stayed in the game with strong outside shooting, hitting 9 of 21 from long range.

Jake Dedominces and Cameron Cramble each provided 19 points to lead the Knights, who also received 16 points from Rowan Granlund and nine from Max Gundlach. Grandlund made four of six three-point attempts while Gundlach finished three of four from outside the arc.

By comparison, the Ponies made just 5 of 22 attempts from three-point range.

Stillwater helped its cause with 16 offensive rebounds.

“We had a good day with that and that’s been a big thing for us all year,” Hannigan said. “They were able to stay in the game and they played really well, but we did what we needed to do to win the game.”

Henry Zollar poured in 26 points to lead the Ponies while AJ Taban and Jaden Jones added 10 points apiece. Taban also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Joe Hoheisel added seven rebounds while Joe Fredkove dished out a team-leading four assists.
