Stillwater achieved at least two objectives while dispatching Roseville 97-79 in a Suburban East Conference girls swimming and diving meet on Thursday, Sept. 19 at Stillwater Middle School.

The Ponies (4-0 SEC, 4-0) placed first in 10 of 12 events to secure a comfortable victory and also expanded potential lineup options for some of the team’s bigger meets down the road.

“We’re just trying to experiment with the lineup and getting ready for that True Team in the next couple weeks,” Ponies coach Brian Luke said. “We want to know what each kid can do in every event. We did a lot of that last week and will this week and luckily we’re able to win the meet also.”

Neva Sanders helped lead a balanced attack with first-place finishes in the 200 individual medley (2:14.32) and the 100 backstroke (59.71), edging teammate Claire Christianson (59.82) with a tight finish in the backstroke.

“They torqued that out pretty good with two going sub-two minutes,” Luke said.

Stillwater also received victories from Lauren Kissinger (200 freestyle), Alex Kruse (diving), Lucy Paczosa (100 butterfly), Jayla Petersen (100 freestyle), Reese Bilot (500 freestyle) and Maddie Mathiason (100 breastroke).

The Ponies swept the top three spots in seven of nine individual events, including Bilot (5:24.15), Annika Beck (5:25.17) and Kissinger (5:30.05) in the 500 freestyle.

The event was a bright spot for the team as eighth-grader Laney Hellyer, who also placed third in the 200 freestyle, posted a time of 5:37.41 in the 500 freestyle in an exhibition lane.

“She found herself a new event there, so that was good,” Luke said. “She’s a really good breastroker, but she’s missing that second event. That might give us some depth in the 500.

“We’ve got to make sure we’re getting the job done (to prepare for True Team). We want to make sure we find out everything we can and be as successful as possible.”

Stillwater is scheduled to compete in the Maroon and Gold Invitational at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center on Saturday, Sept. 28.
