Sports brief: Stillwater Elks Hoop Shoot set for Oct. 29
The Stillwater Elks Lodge 179 is hosting its annual Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest on Sunday, Oct. 29 at Salem Lutheran Church from 1-4 p.m. Competition for boys and girls will be held in three age groups, 8-9 years old, 10-11 and 12-13, as determined by age on April 1, 2024. Winners will advance to district competition with the opportunity to qualify for state, regional and national events. Contact David Wick at 651-503-3955 for additional information. More than three million boys and girls are expected to compete in this year’s Elks Hoop Shoot, which is the largest of many youth activities sponsored by Elks Lodges. The six national champions will receive a trophy and their names will be inscribed on a plaque that appears at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hal of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
Volleyball: Ponies open section tourney with win over North St. Paul
OAK PARK HEIGHTS — Playing like the top seed it received, the Stillwater volleyball team dispatched North St. Paul 3-0 in the Section 4AAAA quarterfinals on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at Stillwater Area High School. SCPA: St. Charles tops Lions in state soccer quarterfinals
The St. Croix Preparatory Academy girls soccer team was blanked by third-seeded St. Charles in the Class A state quarterfinals on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at Irondale High School. It marked the first time the Lions (17-2-1) have been shut out all season. St. Charles advances to face second-seeded Southwest Christian in the semifinals on Tuesday, Oct. 31. SCPA won the Skyline Conference championship earlier this season with an 8-0-0 record, finishing three points ahead of St. Croix Lutheran (7-1-0, 11-6-0) and third-place Concordia Academy (6-2-0, 11-4-3). The Lions defeated Concordia Academy 4-1 in the Section 4A championship game on Tuesday, Oct. 17. Viviana Kenfield scored two goals while Marley Murdock and Kira Woog added a goal each in the victory over Beacons.
