    Wrestling: Stillwater wins twice at Wayzata quadrangular

    PLYMOUTH — Cade Elzen and Cohen Lumby recorded pins in the bottom half of the lineup to help Stillwater hold off Watertown Mayer/Mayer Lutheran 35-27 in a nonconference dual to lead off a quadrangular meet on Thursday, Jan. 25 at Wayzata High School.

    The Ponies (7-1 SEC, 24-6), who defeated eighth-ranked Wayzata earlier this season, did not face the Trojans a second time but followed with a 64-12 victory over Buffalo in their second match of the evening.

    Watertown Mayer/Mayer Lutheran won three of the first four matches to build a 14-6 lead, but the Ponies reeled off three straight victories from 133 to 145 pounds to surge in front 18-14. Isaac Leonard and Keaton Urbanski recorded decision at 133 and 145 pounds while Lumby pinned Karson Tufte in 3:40 at 139 pounds.

    Clinging to a 23-21 lead with three matches remaining, Stillwater received forfeits at 189 and 215 pounds to secure the victory.

    The Ponies dropped just two matches in the victory over Buffalo. Leonard (127 pounds), Cael Spates (145), Lindson Turner (160), Isaac Hunter (172), Mack Carlson (189) and Cittadino Tuttle (185) each collected pins for Stillwater, which also received four forfeits in the match.

    After traveling to Bemidji for a triangular meet on Feb. 2, the Ponies will also face St. Peter in a nonconference road dual on Feb. 8. The Section 4AAA team tournament will take place at Mounds View on Friday, Feb. 16.

    Stillwater sends five to MNGWL state

    Stillwater placed second with 185.5 points in the MNGWL Region 5 qualifier on Saturday, Jan. 27 at Totino-Grace High School in Fridley. Wayzata took top honors with 197 points while Centennial (147), Mounds View (143.5) and Woodbury (134) complete the top five. The 9th Grade & Under State Tournament will take place on Saturday, Feb. 3 at Champlin Park High School.

    Stillwater crowned three individual champions in the event, including Eli Nye, Cohen Lumby and Clark Bryant.

    Nye defeated Ryan Hansen of Centennial 5-1 in the finals to capture the title at 121 pounds. Cohen Lumby prevailed in the 133-pound weight class, earning a 13-4 major decision over Mounds View’s Patch Bulera in the finals. Clark Bryant pinned Nathan Crislip of Woodbury in 1:59 to earn the title at 145 pounds.

    Additional placewinners for Stillwater include: August Hartung (2nd at 100 pounds), Ryan Birkenmayer (3rd-107), Ryan Gregory (6th-114), Kingston Pak (5th-127), Braden Hatalla (2nd-139), Evan Heuer (5th-152) and Evan Milby (4th-172).

    With their runner-up finishes, Hartung and Hatalla join Stillwater’s three first-place finishers in qualifying for the state tournament.
