    Wrestling: Stillwater knocks off reigning state champs

    BEMIDJI — It was a productive road trip against strong competition as the Stillwater wrestling team secured victories over Bemidji and Hastings in a triangular on Friday, Feb. 2 at Bemidji High School.

    The Ponies (7-1 SEC, 26-6), who were scheduled to close out the regular season with a dual at St. Peter on Feb. 8, upended defending state champion and fifth-ranked Hastings 40-17 and also dispatched Bemidji 31-19.

    Stillwater won four of the last five matches to pull away from the host Lumberjacks. The Ponies were clinging to an 18-15 lead before Lindson Turner sparked the late run with an 11-3 major decision at 160 pounds.

    Isaac Hunter and Mack Carlson followed with two-point victories at 172 and 189 pounds before Bemidji answered with a major decision at 215 pounds. Cittadino Tuttle, who is ranked No. 2 for Stillwater at 215 pounds, bumped up to 285 pounds and came away with a 3-2 victory over Parker Orvik, the No. 3-ranked heavyweight in the Class AAA.

    Hastings built a 17-7 lead against the Ponies with four straight victories from 121 to 139 pounds, but Stillwater charged back with victories in each of the remaining seven matches.

    Joe Dauffenbach and Noah Nicholson sparked Stillwater early with wins at 107 and 114 pounds before hitting the strength of the Hastings lineup.

    Keaton Urbanski sparked the comeback for the Ponies with a technical fall at 145 pounds. Cael Spates followed with a pin at 152 pounds to put the Ponies in front 18-17 and they never looked back.

    Lindson Turner recorded a major decision at 160 pounds and Isaac Hunter prevailed 13-9 for the Ponies at 172 pounds. Mack Carlson and Andrew Olson pinned their opponents at 189 and 285 pounds, sandwiched around Cittadino Tuttle’s 10-4 victory over fifth-ranked Derrick Steinke at 215 pounds.

    Bemidji tops Stillwater girls

    The Stillwater girls wrestling team competed in a rare dual meet and was stopped by Bemidji 42-26 on Friday, Feb. 2 at Bemidji High School.

    Jaelyn Surgenor, Bianca Eide and Lillian Eggum sent the Ponies out to a 14-0 lead with victories from 107 to 121 pounds.

    Stillwater led 20-6 after Merci Kent notched a pin for Stillwater at 133 pounds, but the Lumberjacks charged back with three straight pins to pull in front 24-20. Audrey Rogotzke recorded a pin at 160 pounds as Stillwater regained the lead, but it was short-lived after forfeiting at three of the four remaining weight classes.

    MNGWL State Tourney

    Stillwater was represented by three wrestlers in the MNGWL 9th Grade & Under State Tourney on Saturday Feb. 3 at Champlin Park High School.

    Five Ponies qualified for the tournament, but August Hartung (100 pounds) and Cohen Lumby (133) did not compete at state.

    Eli Nye collected the only victory for the Ponies on the way to a 1-2 finish. After losing in the opening round, Nye cruised past Truman Olsem of Fulda 13-0 in the wrestlebacks before getting eliminated.

    Braden Hatalla and Clark Bryant finished 0-2 while competing at 139 and 145 pounds.
