This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.

Alpine skiing — After realignment by the MSHSL moves the Stillwater alpine skiing teams from Section 4 to Section 7, the Ponies edge conference rival Forest Lake 409-406 to win the boys section championship at Giants Ridge. Less than one second separates the team’s top four finishers Cory Carlsen, Westin Anderson, Kyle Szczepanski and Zach Raven. The Stillwater girls endure some falls and finish eighth in the team standings, but senior Natalie Gjermo earns a trip to state as an individual.

Gymnastics — Cretin-Derham Hall features the top two all-around gymnasts, but Stillwater outscores the Raiders by nearly two points in the final rotation to rally for a 135.65-134.975 Suburban East Conference victory at Stillwater Area High School. Sidnee Ronsberg leads the Ponies in the vault and floor while Danielle Keran delivers the team’s top score in the bars and places third in the all-around.

SAHS — Five soccer players are among the Stillwater Area High School athletes signing a national letter of intent, including Lexi Andres, Natalie Johnson, Tracy Mather, Leah Nitardy and Ali Schilling. Football players Trevor Tillett, Danny Ekstrand and Peter Palecek are finalized their college commitments, along with baseball player Trevor Dudar.
