10 years ago this week...

This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.

Nordic skiing — Led by Megan Weaver, Cela Peterson and Vessa Pearsall, the Stillwater girls Nordic skiing team places three skiers among the top five and cruises past Forest Lake for a 386-356 victory in the Section 4 championship at Battle Creek. It marks the team’s 34th section title in the past 39 years dating back to 1976. Stillwater places behind Forest Lake 385-368 in the boys standings, but qualifies five individuals for state, including Sam Hanson, Quentin Ikuta, Linder Wendt, Shad Kraftson and Nolan Noer.

Girls hockey — The Stillwater girls hockey team scores three times in the third period to rally from a one-goal deficit in a 5-3 victory over Cretin-Derham Hall in the Section 4AA semifinals at Aldrich Arena. Ali Biagini, Carlie Hart and Georgia Eger each score in the third period for the Ponies (18-8-1), who also receive 23 saves from Caitlin Carter.

Alpine skiing — Westin Anderson places 13th in the individual standings to earn all-state honors as the Stillwater boys alpine skiing team scores 121 points to place fourth in the state meet behind Blake (162), Forest Lake (142) and Orono (121). Kyle Szczepanski, Sam Skaret and Cory Carlsen also contribute to the scoring for the Ponies.
