This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.

Nordic skiing — Megan Weaver and Vessa Pearsall place 18th and 22nd in the individual standings to help lift the Stillwater girls Nordic skiing team to a third-place finish behind Wayzata and Robbinsdale Armstrong in the state meet at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. In the boys competition, Sam Hanson and Quentin Ikuta finish 27th and 28th to lead a contingent of five individual state qualifiers for the Ponies in a race won by Bloomington Jefferson’s Zak Ketterson.

Wrestling — Despite matching Woodbury with seven victories, the Stillwater wrestling team falls short in a 36-33 loss to the Royals in the semifinals of the Section 4AAA team tournament at Woodbury High School. Tartan the upends Woodbury 35-32 in the finals to earn the section title.

Winter Olympics — An overflow crowd of spectators packs Chilkoot Cafe and Cyclery in Stillwater at 4 a.m., to watch Stillwater Area High School graduate Jessie Diggins anchor the United States’ 4x5-kilometer relay in cross country skiing at the Winter Olympics in Russia. The Americans place ninth in the race, which follows an eighth-place finish for Diggins in the 15-kilometer skiathlon and a 13th-place showing in the freestyle sprint.
