OAK PARK HEIGHTS — After opening the season with a comfortable victory over Tartan, the Stillwater girls basketball kicked off its postseason campaign with a 74-26 victory over the Titans in the Section 4AAAA quarterfinals on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at Stillwater Area High School.
The third-seeded Ponies (20-7) travel to second seeded East Ridge (19-8) for a semifinal contest on Saturday, March 2. The other semifinal will feature top-seeded White Bear Lake (19-7) hosting Woodbury (14-13).
Originally scheduled to be held at a neutral site, the semifinals and finals are instead being hosted by the higher seed because the gym at Hastings High School is no longer available due to an issue with tie bleachers. The finals are slated for Thursday, March 7.
Stillwater was swept by East Ridge during the regular season, losing 73-70 in conference play on Jan. 12 and again by the score of 80-73 on Feb. 16. The Ponies, who advanced to state as the No. 3 seed a year ago, have played in the section finals each of the past five seasons.
Behind a game-high 23 points from Amy Thompson, Stillwater jumped out to a 50-14 halftime lead against Tartan (4-22) and never looked back.
Ten different players contributed to the scoring for the Ponies, who also received 15 points from Liana Buckhalton and 13 from Annika Peper.
Angelina Funchess delivered 11 points to pace the Titans.
