This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.

Boys swimming and diving — Led by senior Brady Anderson, who receives all-state honors after placing eighth in the 200 freestyle (1:44.77), the Ponies score points in 8 of 12 events to place 14th with 59 points in the Class AA boys swimming and diving state meet. Jon Busse also sets a school record while placing ninth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.86.

Boys hockey — After more than half a century, the Stillwater boys hockey team qualifies for its first-ever state tournament with a 2-1 victory over Hill-Murray in the Section 4AA finals, which also marks the final game played at the State Fairgrounds Coliseum. Brandon Jungmann provides the game-winner with a shot from the point goes off a stick and flutters past the goaltender four minutes into the third period. Devin Cates provides the other goal for the Ponies (16-10-2), who also receive 24 saves from Josh Benson.

Girls basketball — Erin Thiets delivers 25 points and Paige Becker adds 24 points, which are season-highs for both players, to propel the fifth-seeded Stillwater girls basketball team to a 66-52 victory over No. 4 seed Tartan in the Section 4AAAA quarterfinals. The Ponies (9-18) limit Marquette recruit Tia Elbert to 18 points, which is less than half of her 37.3 season-scoring average.
