Track and field: Dewall earns All-American honors for Saints

Stillwater graduate Lars Dewall earned All-American honors while contributing to a sixth-place finish in the distance medley relay for the St. Scholastica men’s team in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday, March 8 at Virginia Beach, Va.

It was the second All-American designation for Dewall, a graduate student at the Duluth school who also received NCAA Division III All-American honors in cross-country in the fall.

Dewall led off a relay team that also included Noah Kubicek of Owatonna, Tucker Wallin of Red Wing and Calvin Boone of St. Paul Highland Park. Boone, who finished just behind Dewall in cross-country nationals in the fall, ran a blistering 4:05 final leg (1,600 meters) to help the Saints move up from ninth to sixth in the final standings.

Dewall completed the opening 1,200-meter leg in 3:04.09, which put the Saints in ninth place for Kubicek’s 400-meter second leg. He completed that leg in 48.14 seconds to keep the Saints in ninth place before Wallin maintained that position while running his 800-meter leg in 1:53.61.

Boone did the rest from there, surging past three runners in the final 600 meters to slip comfortably into the top eight required for All-American honors. Boone’s final leg was the fastest in the entire field.

They became the school’s first relay team to qualify for indoor nationals and the time bettered their own school record and the MIAC record.

The team from the University of Lynchburg won the national title with a time of 9:47.17.

Dewall received the Jim McLaughlin Scholarship Award after graduating in 2019 from SAHS, where he competed in cross country, Nordic skiing, and track.
