MANKATO — It wasn’t the biggest victory celebrated in the city, but the Stillwater girls track and field team claimed the top spot in the Minnesota State Varsity Showcase on Saturday, March 30 at Myers Field House.

The Ponies scored 58 points to outdistance Holmen (49) and third-place Roseville (40.5) to prevail in the 30-team field for the second year in a row.

The Stillwater boys racked up 65 points to finish second behind Hudson (79) while Onalaska followed in third place with 64 points.

Providing the bigger news in Mankato on Saturday as the Mavericks men’s basketball team capturing the NCAA Division II national championship — just one day after the Minnesota State women’s basketball team defeated Texas Woman’s University for the school’s first title of the weekend. It marked the first time since 1984 that one school has produced both the men’s and women’s championships in the same year.

But back on the track, it was a productive day in the first scored meet of the season for the Ponies.

Junior Liberty Quast delivered a first-place finish in the triple jump (34-11 3/4) and added second-place showings in the 60- (7.77) and 200-meter (25.83) races. Kayla Kajer finished second for the Ponies in the 60-meter hurdles (9.83) and Karina Fischer notched a third-place finish in the 400 (1:00.06). Anya Williams placed third in the long jump (16-9 1/4) and fifth in the high jump (5-0).

Karina Fischer also led off Stillwater’s second-place 4x400 relay team (4:16.15) that also included Addy Brekke, Ella Martens and Ari Riser.

The Stillwater boys were unable to defend their title in the meet, but racked up 15 top-eight finishes.

Andrew Brekke paced an impressive showing for the Ponies in the pole vault, finishing second with a height of 13-11. Teammates Henry Corbett (13-5) and Liam Neis (12-11) followed in third and fourth. Stillwater also received a second-place finish from Chase Johnson in the high jump (6-4) and a sixth-place performance from Brett Hilde in the triple jump (39-10 1/2).

Soel Riser was the team’s top performer on the track, placing third in the 200- (23.57) and 400-meter (51.79) races.

Max Gerald (2:02.67) and Cohen Smith (2:06.52) placed fourth and seventh in the 800 while Dylan Riniker crossed the line in 4:29.97 to place seventh in the 1,600. Jack Richter finished eighth in the 3,200 (10:13.50).

Fruma Felema landed seventh in the 60 hurdles with a time of 9.08 and the Ponies also placed among the top seven in all three relays.
