Brendon Rickheim fired a career-low round and six Stillwater players turned in scores in the 70s, but the Ponies were unable to keep pace with the blistering pace set by Cretin-Derham Hall in the 20-team East Ridge Invitational on Wednesday, April 24 at StoneRidge Golf Club.

The Ponies posted a score of 296 to place fourth behind Cretin-Derham Hall (272), Edina (289) and Chanhassen (290). More than one-third of the field shot 298 or lower as Chaska and Hudson tied for fifth at 297 and Rosemount settled for seventh despite turning in a socre of 298.

Rickheim carded a 3-under par 69 to lead the Ponies, which was good enough for sixth in the individual standings.

Park Trobec finished his round of 74 in style as he made a hole-in-one on the 152-yard, par-3 ninth hole. He also started the round in impressive fashion with three birdies on his first four holes.

Zeke Roberts contributed a 76 while Ryan Stanek and Luke Myers each followed with a 77 for the Ponies. Tyler Coleman was not far behind with a 79.

“The Ponies had another good day,” Ponies coach John Scanlon said. “Shooting six scores in the 70s is outstanding.”

Torger Ohe of Edina shot a 66 to finish as the individual medalist, but Cretin-Derham Hall featured four finishers among the top six with scores of 69 or better. Joe Honsa led the way for the Raiders with a 67, followed by Sam Udovich (68), Miles Bollinger (68) and Michael Markley (69).

Wednesday’s tournament also doubled as a Suburban East Conference match and the Ponies placed second in those standings to solidify their hold on second place in the standings after two SEC events.

Sam Udovich carded a 65 to claim medalist honors and he had company at the top with three Raiders placing among the top four. Miles Bollinger was the runner-up for the Raiders with a 69 while teammate Michael Markley and Park’s Tyler Bonin tied for third at 70.

“The conditions were windy and difficult but the Ponies persevered,” Stillwater coach John Scanlon said. “The score was our second best in Stillwater history, unfortunately Cretin-Derham Hall shot 279.

“The only thing we did wrong was doubles or triples. There’s an expression that ‘the definition of a double bogey is a bad shot followed by a stupid shot.’ The guys really played well and successfully battled the wind.”
