10 years ago this week...

This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.

Girls golf — The Stillwater girls golf team emerges from a three-way tie with Woodbury and Cretin-Derham Hall to win a Suburban East Conference meet at Highland National Golf Course. The three teams each finished with a total of 176, but depth paid off for the Ponies with Sydney O’Neal, Anna Kaul and Maddie Luoma each carding a 46 to provide tie-breaker edge over the Royals and Raiders. Erin Thiets leads Stillwater with a 39.

Baseball — The Ponies muster just three hits, but Mitch Bruggers launches a two-run homer in the second inning as send Stillwater to a 2-1 Suburban East Conference baseball victory at Hastings. Trevor Dudar and Cory Albertson add a hit each for the Ponies, who also receive a strong showing from Nathan Mathwig on the mound. Mathwig did not allow an earned run while limiting the Raiders to eight hits and one walk with four strikeouts in the complete game.

Girls track and field — Alex Holmberg places first in the long jump at 15-1 1/4 to provide Stillwater its only first-place finish, but the Ponies still secure a runner-up finish in the eight-team Hopkins Invitational, which uses a true team format for scoring.
