    Boys tennis: Stillwater runs conference dual meet winning streak to seven

    OAK PARK HEIGHTS — The Stillwater boys tennis team cruised past Cretin-Derham Hall 7-0 in a Suburban East Conference dual on Wednesday, May 8 at Stillwater Area High School.

    It was the seventh straight conference victory for the Ponies (7-1 SEC, 10-3) since falling to Mounds View on April 11.

    The closest match came at third doubles where Stillwater’s James Daum and Cole Handberg held off Nolan Rosenberger and Ronan Traynor 7-6, 4-6, 10-7. The Ponies, competing for the third time in as many days, won the remaining matches in straight sets.

    Stillwater 7, C-D Hall 0

    Singles

    No. 1 — Carter Magistad (St) def. Luke Paar, 6-2, 6-1.

    No. 2 — West Dell (St) def. Max Redden, 6-2, 6-1.

    No. 3 — Dustin Jurca (St) def. Daniel Tolson, 6-0, 6-0.

    No. 4 — Joe Potucek (St) won by default.

    Doubles

    No. 1 — Oren Hamilton-Garin Warner (St) def. Will Bischoff-Garrett Poynter, 6-0, 6-2.

    No. 2 — Logan Liveringhouse-Ben Most (St) def. Joey Massari-Jackson Jewison, 6-1, 6-1.

    No. 3 — James Daum-Cole Handberg (St) def. Nolan Rosenberger-Ronan Traynor, 7-6, 4-6, 10-7.

    Stillwater 4, East Ridge 3

    At Oak Park Heights, the Ponies improved to 4-1 in matches decided by a single point with their 4-3 conference victory over East Ridge on Tuesday, May 7 at SAHS.

    Stillwater won three of four singles points, including a 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 triumph by Dustin Jurca at the third sport, and also picked up a critical victory at first doubles. Oren Hamilton and Garin Warner rallied after dropping the first set to pull out a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory over Ben Arana and Tyler Klimpel.

    Two singles matches and all three doubles matches needed three sets to decide, with the Raptors prevailing 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 at second doubles and 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 at third doubles. Rohan Kuruvila also added a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory for the Raptors over Joe Potucek at fourth singles.

    Carter Magistad continued his strong play at first singles for the Ponies with a 6-1, 6-1 victory and West Dell prevailed 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

    No. 2 — Max Garms-Jack Werner (ER) def. Logan Liveringhouse-Ben Most, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

    No. 3 — Lincoln Kopacek-Joshua Soo (ER) def. Gavin Schuna-Jack Myers, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.

    Buffalo 4, Stillwater 3

    At Oak Park Heights, victories in two of three doubles matches helped propel Buffalo to a 4-3 nonconference win over the Ponies on Monday, May 6 at SAHS.

    Carter Magistad and Joe Patucek won at the first and fourth spot to earn a split for Stillwater in singles, but the Bison prevailed in straight sets at second and third doubles to hand the Ponies their first 4-3 loss of the season.

    No. 3 — Daniel Jungwirth-Grady Grossman (Buf) def. Tyler Duda-Gavin Schuna, 6-1, 6-3.

    Stillwater 7, Irondale 0

    At New Brighton, Gavin Schuna and Ben Most were pushed to tie-breakers before pulling out their victory at second doubles to help secure the sweep in Stillwater’s 7-0 conference victory over the Knights on Friday, May 3 at Irondale High School.

    Carter Magistad, West Dell, Dustin Jurca and Logan Liveringhouse each won their singles matches in straight sets.
