    Boys tennis: Ponies advance to section semifinals

    OAK PARK HEIGHTS — The Stillwater boys tennis team did not drop a set while cruising to a 7-0 victory over Roseville in the Section 4AA quarterfinals on Wednesday, May 15 at Stillwater Area High School.

    The third-seeded Ponies (12-3), who received a first-round bye, advance to face No. 2 seed Mounds View in the semifinals on Friday, May 17. Roseville was the sixth seed and advanced with a 7-0 victory over St. Paul Johnson in the opening round.

    Stillwater improved on its earlier 6-1 victory over the Raiders. Carter Magistad, West Dell, Dustin Jurca and Logan Liveringhouse each posted straight-set victories in the singles and the success carried through in the doubles.

    Oren Hamilton and Garin Warner turned in a 6-3, 6-1 victory at first doubles and the Ponies won slightly tighter matches at the second and third spots. Joe Potucek and Ben Most prevailed 6-2, 7-6 at second doubles while Tyler Duda and Cole Handberg added a 7-5, 6-1 victory at third doubles.

    No. 1 — Carter Magistad (St) def. Peter Linabery, 6-2, 6-0.

    No. 2 — West Dell (St) def. Ryan Duce, 6-3, 6-3.

    No. 3 — Dustin Jurca (St) def. Trent Silverthorn, 6-4, 6-0.

    No. 4 — Logan Liveringhouse (St) def. Leon Bretz, 6-3, 6-1.

    Doubles

    No. 1 — Oren Hamilton-Garin Warner (St) def. Andrew Barnes-Vincent Gruis, 6-3, 6-1.

    No. 2 — Joe Potucek-Ben Most (St) def. Will Wright-Cole Hartman, 6-2, 7-6.

    No. 3 — Tyler Duda-Cole Handberg (St) def. Soren Klarqvist-Socren Longballa, 7-5, 6-1.

    Stillwater 5, Woodbury 2

    At Woodbury, the Ponies wrapped up sole possession of second place in the Suburban East Conference standings with a 5-2 victory over the Royals on Thursday, May 9 at Woodbury High School.

    Stillwater finished with an 8-1 record in the conference, losing only to perennial power Mounds View, which captured its 33rd conference championship in the past 37 seasons.

    The Ponies swept all four singles matches while Oren Hamilton and Garin Warner won comfortably at first doubles.

    Woodbury collected its only points at second and third doubles.

    No. 2 — William O’Brien-Ben Gurno (Wo) def. Logan Liveringhouse-Ben Most, 6-2, 6-4.

    No. 3 — Matthew Reed-Jordan Swango (Wo) def. Gavin Schuna-Jack Myers, 6-1, 6-2.
