    Boys golf: Ponies finish second at Forest Hills

    FOREST LAKE — The Stillwater boys golf team took another step towards securing the Suburban East Conference championship with a runner-up showing on Monday, May 13 at Forest Hills Golf Club.

    White Bear Lake edged the Ponies 305-306 for the top spot in what the final match before the conference tournament on Tuesday, May 21 at Troy Burne. Cretin-Derham Hall tied Park at 309, but won the tie-breaker to place third and keep its diminishing conference title hopes alive while East Ridge followed in fifth at 311.

    The top three teams will be separated by seven points entering the SEC Tournament, with Stillwater (41) holding a slight lead on White Bear Lake (38) and Cretin-Derham Hall (34). Points are doubled for the conference tournament.

    The Raiders have three of five conference events this season while the Ponies have been remarkably consistent while picking up one victory to go with four second-place finishes.

    “We are prepared for the SEC Championships,” Ponies coach John Scanlon said.

    According to Scanlon, Dan Berggren hit 16 of 18 greens in regulation on the way to a 74 to set the pace for the Ponies. Brendon Rickheim wasn’t far behind with a 76 and teammates Ryan Stanek (77) and Luke Myers (79) completed the scoring. The Ponies also received an 80 from Parker Trobec and an 82 from Zeke Roberts.

    “It was great to see a mixture of scores,” Scanlon said. “Our No. 3 through 6 players held down the fort today.”

    Joe Honsa of Cretin-Derham Hall claimed medalist honors with a 70. The Raiders competed without one of its top players in Sam Udovich, who missed the meet while competing at Troy Burne in a local qualifying event for the U.S. Open, where he tied for second with a 69 to advance to Final Qualifying on June 3.

    Ponies 6th at DLCC

    At Detroit Lakes, even while competing short-handed due to illness, the Ponies placed sixth with a total of 623 (314-309) in the two-day Northwest Classic on May 10-11 at Detroit Lakes Country Club.

    Edina posted a score of 584 (294-290) to hold off runner-ups Cretin-Derham Hall (305-293—598) and Maple Grove (306-292—598) for the top spot while White Bear Lake (316-301—617) and Detroit Lakes (313-306—619) followed in fourth and fifth.

    Brendon Rickheim led the way for the Ponies also provided one biggest highlights of the event on the way to an eighth-place finish in the individual standings at 151 (75-76).

    Rickheim made an albatross on the 487-yard, par-5 12th hole in the second round — which was his final hole of the tournament. The sophomore placed his drive between the two ponds on each side of the fairway and then launched a hybrid 190 yards into the wind that landed right in the hole.

    “Brendon has had a great year,” Ponies coach John Scanlon said. “He has really turned into a precision golfer.”

    Ryan Stanek shot back-to-back 77s to place 16th with a score of 154 while Tyler Coleman (81-77—158) and Luke Myers (81-79—160) placed 27th and 33rd. Parker Trobec finished 49th (84-80—164).

    Sam Udovich (70-65—135) of Cretin-Derham Hall claimed individual honors with a one-shot victory over Edina’s Torger Ohe (71-65—136).

    • The Ponies also placed fourth with a score of 319 in a quadrangular meet on Saturday, May 11 at Wedgewood Cove Golf Club in Albert Lea.

    Albert Lea outdistanced St. Thomas Academy 299-306 while Holy Angels followed in third place with a total of 314.

    Just three shots separated Stillwater’s four scorers, which included David Calderone (78), Axel Diehl (79), John Lillie (81) and Grant Cotton (81).
