This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.

Baseball — Stillwater scores three runs in nine innings off Mahtomedi starter Michael Baumann, but gives up two in the bottom of the seventh and eventually the deciding run in the bottom of the 10th as the top-seeded Zephyrs upend the Ponies 4-3 in the semifinals of the Section 4AAA tournament at Midway Stadium. Mitch Bruggers doubles twice and finishes with three hits to lead the Ponies (13-10)

Synchronized swimming — Stillwater claims titles in the long trio and long team events, but places second behind Wayzata in the synchronized swimming state meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. The Trojans outscore Stillwater 137-92 for their eighth consecutive state title while St. Louis Park (74) follows in third. It marks the 11th consecutive state runner-up finish for the Ponies. Sophie Ogaard, Mamie Thrall and Grace Zimmer finish first in the long trio and contribute to Stillwater’s victory in the long team category.

Boys track and field — Nick Wanovich (100 meters), Allen-Michael Burback (800), Eli Krahn (1,600) and Isaac Hale (high jump) capture individual titles, but the Stillwater boys track and field team (149) places third behind Mounds View (201.5) and White Bear Lake (156) in the Suburban East Conference boys track and field meet at East Ridge High School.
