MAPLEWOOD — The Stillwater girls golf team placed third in the Section 4AAA tournament on May 30-31 at Goodrich Golf Course. The Ponies posted a two-day total of 711 (355-356) to finish behind Mahtomedi (670) and runner-up White Bear Lake (689).

The top four teams were remarkable consistent in both rounds, with Mahtomedi and Cretin-Derham Hall slipping by just two shots on Day 2 and the Bears and Ponies finishing within one shot of their opening-round scores.

Cretin-Derham Hall’s Lily Vincelli was the individual medalist with a score of 147 (75-72), which was 12 shots ahead of runner-up Ivory Drusch (80-79—159) of White Bear Lake.

Stillwater’s Addison Schinka finished just one shot out of a playoff for the final individual state bid, which is reserved for the top five finishers not on the qualifying team. The eighth-grader put herself in the hung with an 80 in Round 1, but a 90 in the second round put her in eighth place, one shot behind Bailey Eddicus (80-89—169) of White Bear Lake.

Along with Vincelli, Drusch and Eddicus, the other individual state qualifiers were Hattie Hemthong (79-83—162) of St. Paul Comor Park and Gabby Ishaq (87-79—166) of St. Paul Highland Park.

Vyan Abdullah, one of just two seniors in the section lineup for Stillwater, finished in a three-way tie for ninth-place with a total of 172 (86-86).

Sophomore Sam Schinka (94-89—183) placed 15th overall, followed by senior teammate Kylie Voight in a tie for 17th at 186 (95-91). Freshman Nora Roberts (97-91—188) and junior Jenna Voight (97-92—189) placed 19th and 20th for the Ponies, who placed second in the Suburban East Conference Tournament the previous week to tie for fourth place in the overall conference standings.

This marks the first time since 2007 that Stillwater has not been represented by an individual or team at state.
