10 years ago this week...

This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.

Girls lacrosse — Junior Ellie Anderson scores a goal in the final minute and then wins the ensuing center draw to help fifth-seeded Stillwater slip past Lakeville South 10-9 in the state quarterfinals at Chanhassen High School. Carter Sanderson leads the Ponies (14-3) with three goals while Anderson and Kate Sheely add two goals apiece.

Boys track and field — Stillwater sophomore Eli Krahn defends his individual state championship in the 1,600 meters and adds another gold in the 3,200 meters to lead the Ponies to a fifth-place finish in the team standings at the MSHSL Class AA state meet at Hamline University. Stillwater also places second with Jonathan Breckheimer, Alex Percival, Sam Hanson and Bailey Hesse-Withbroe in the 4x800 relay and Isaac Hale lands fourth in the high jump after clearing 6-3.

Girls golf — Competing in her fourth state tournament, senior Erin Thiets represents the Stillwater girls golf team with a 45th-place finish with a total of 173 (88-85) in the Class AAA state tournament at Bunker Hills. Claudia Kim, a seventh-grader making her state tournament debut for the Ponies, finishes 53rd with a score of 178 (88-90).

Boys golf — Climbing 20 spots from the previous season, Stillwater senior Evan Anderson places 28th in the Class AAA boys golf state tournament at Bunker Hills. After advancing to state in a playoff, Anderson is steady while shooting 76 and 78 for a two-day total of 154.
