10 years ago this week...

This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.

Boys tennis — Senior Mitch Johnson receives the Most Valuable Athlete award for the Stillwater boys tennis team, which finishes 4-5 to place fifth in the Suburban East Conference and finishes 8-8 overall after falling in the semifinals of the Section 4AA tournament. Daniel Ahrendt and Jack leach join Johnson in earning all-conference honors while Nick Rheinberger receives the Chuck Anderson Scholarship Award.

Synchronized swimming — One of four all-conference performers for the Ponies, senior Elise Adrian is chosen the Most Valuable Athlete for the state runner-up Stillwater synchronized swimming team. Emily Adrian, Claire Haws and Katie Koenning join Elise in earning All-East Metro Conference honors while Sophie Barnes, Grace Gualtieri and Skyler Olson receive honorable mention all-conference recognition.

VFW baseball — Alex Barrett allows just five hits and one walk in six innings to help carry the Lake Elmo VFW baseball team to a 13-3 Fourth District League victory over East Ridge. It marks the 13th consecutive victory for Post #5725, which has given up a total of just 16 runs in its previous 15 games.
