Viewpoint: Designing schools wit hout libraries restricts students’ autonomy, freedom
In May 2022, Lansing voters overwhelmingly passed a $129.7 million bond measure to build three new elementary schools. Lansing Schools elementary students and families, however, were shocked to learn that their new schools were designed without libraries and librarians. Eliminating these resources impedes student access to educational materials and violates the Library Bill of Rights.
Planned music venue on Michigan Avenue in Ypsilanti receives EGLE clean-up grant
A proposed artist and musical venue in Ypsilanti is closer to reality thanks to a brownfield grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy. The proposed venue on the site of the old Materials Unlimited antiques store has been awarded an over-$477,000 EGLE grant. It will be used to pay for lead, asbestos, mold, and hazardous materials surveys, as well as interior and exterior demolition and abatement.

On September 13, 2024, from 8am to 1pm, the Washtenaw County Conservation District (WCCD) will host a field day that will be focused on reducing nutrient loss from field tiles and the use of cover crops to improve soil health, suppress weeds, and assist with nutrient cycling, and will also feature a drone demonstration. The field day will be at H & H Harvest in Bridgewater Township (9880 Austin Rd, Saline), which is operated by Brandon Henes.
Training combating hate crime should be focus of Ann Arbor police, City Council says
ANN ARBOR, MI – The Ann Arbor City Council has asked the local police department and other city leaders to focus on training to combat hate crime in the city. In a unanimous vote, Ann Arbor City Council approved a resolution July 15 directing the city’s administrator and attorney’s office to tweak their training regarding how hate and bias crimes are responded to in the city.
Ann Arbor puts $1M behind hiring ‘safe streets’ consultant
ANN ARBOR, MI — Ann Arbor is planning more incremental improvements to make city streets safer, including adding more flexible posts to separate bike lanes from cars. WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI - A federal grant will help expand education programs for the youngest learners in several Washtenaw County schools. The Office of Head Start, part of the federal Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families, has awarded a $5.6-million grant to the Washtenaw Intermediate School District to continue providing Head Start programs, officials said.
