One in three Asians over age 50 in the Bay Area say they have experienced hate since the pandemic began, according to a report by Dr. Lingsheng Li, a geriatrician and research fellow at the University of California, San Francisco.

Li's team interviewed over 250 Asian American Pacific Islander seniors, almost all of whom expressed concern about hate acts. Those acts could include physical attacks as well as spitting or coughing on someone, verbal harassment or denying someone service.

AAPI seniors told Li that they began avoiding public transit. Almost one out of three hateful acts counted by Li occurred on public transit.

An 88-year-old Lodi man died after a four-vehicle chain-reaction pileup east of Stockton on Friday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol said.

The man went into cardiac arrest when he was removed from his car by firefighters, the CHP said.

The collision was triggered when a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe that was eastbound on state Highway 4 came to a stop about 12:38 p.m., waiting to turn left onto Gillis Road, police said.

Two vehicles behind it -- a 2021 Dodge Ram pickup pulling a single-axle trailer, and a 2022 Honda Civic -- both slowed to a stop, the CHP said, but a 2015 Ford F550 crane truck struck the rear of the Honda Civic, driven by the 88-year-old man, police said.

San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas said Friday that a man accused of arson for allegedly setting fire to a mobile home park last month in Stockton that left a woman and two children dead could potentially face the death penalty.

Jose Carmen Cardona, 59, was arrested without incident Thursday in Modesto at a bus stop where authorities believe he was allegedly attempting to flee the country. He is set to be arraigned Monday inside a Stockton courtroom.

Cardona became the suspect of an investigation in connection with the death of Lisbeth Gutierrez, 32, Julian Dejesus Cardona Gutierrez, 10, and Juan Jose Gutierrez Salazar, 6, who were killed June 25 while they were asleep in a five-wheel trailer.

Freitas said Cardona and Gutierrez were in a dating relationship, but the children were not his biologically.

The victim is believed to be a 40-year-old woman who was a transient. The Contra Costa County Coroner's Office is withholding her identity.

A 35-year-old transient, William S. Ramirez, was arrested on suspicion of homicide and arson about 7 a.m. Thursday when officers discovered evidence during a search in the 1800 block of 23rd Street, police said.

A teenager who stabbed a Brentwood police officer in October received a maximum confinement term of six years, including a baseline term of four years during which the court thinks the minor needs to receive rehabilitative services.

The teen was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with an enhancement of great bodily injury. He was sentenced in juvenile court on July 3.

Officers responded around 5:35 p.m. on Oct. 11 to a report of a person in the area of Brentwood City Park who was armed with a kitchen knife. Arriving officers found a then-16-year-old boy holding a knife.

Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, but the boy stabbed an officer when they moved in to detain him.

A 74-year-old Filipina woman was shoved to her death in front of an oncoming BART train in San Francisco last week, rekindling fear in a community of Bay Area Asian seniors who have been spat upon, harassed and assaulted.

"My heart just sank," said Dr. Lingsheng Li, a geriatrician and research fellow at the University of California, San Francisco. Regardless of whether it was racially motivated, "whenever something like this happens to a member of the community, it resurfaces trauma for a lot of people, especially older Asian immigrants," she said.

One in three Asians over age 50 in the Bay Area say they have experienced hate since the pandemic began, according to a report Li and her team released in May.

Li's team interviewed over 250 Asian American Pacific Islander seniors, almost all of whom expressed concern about hate acts. Those acts could include physical attacks as well as spitting or coughing on someone, verbal harassment or denying someone service. A fear of race-based crime stops some older AAPI residents of the Bay Area from leaving their homes, according to Li's report. Almost half of participants said they changed their daily lives out of concern for their safety.

Isolation and worry can carry heavy consequences for their health, escalating dementia, depression, anxiety and accompanying physical effects like high blood pressure, Li reported. One respondent said fear caused her to miss doctor's appointments for two years. Some skipped important medical treatments. Others expressed that their mind feels less quick because they leave their home less.

A South Bay man was charged for allegedly molesting teenage children at his house during church trips, according to Santa Clara County prosecutors.

In a statement Thursday, the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office said Norlan Macias, a 54-year-old resident of San Jose, faces 11 counts of felony sexual molestation of five minors, ranging from 8 to 17 years old.

According to prosecutors, their case against Macias began in 2020 when a retired San Jose police officer recognized the suspect from a video podcast called "Preacher Boys", which documents child abuse linked to religious institutions. He called 911.

Macias allegedly used to take a group of teenage parishioners of the North Valley Baptist Church out on a boat at Lake Anderson in Morgan Hill. The boys would then go to the suspect's house in Morgan Hill, where the alleged molestations took place between 2001 and 2012.

Police and prosecutors are seeking others who may have been victimized by Macias, who was a janitor with the Campbell Union and Mountain View school districts.

A nonprofit for animals is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who shot a cat in Soledad last week.

The SPCA Monterey County said that on July 4, someone found a wounded cat on Crestfield Street near Soledad High School. The animal was shot in the leg with a pellet gun, breaking her limb to the point it was found dangling. It was to the SPCA for treatment, where they later had to amputate her leg.

No one has come to look for the Libby, a one and a half year old brown tabby cat.

SPCA Monterey County hopes the reward will help them to get information on the suspect.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the SPCA at (831) 373-2631. For donations, call (831) 264-5421 or donate online at www.SPCAmc.org.

San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus has been named to California's jail oversight board by Governor Gavin Newsom.

Her appointment to the Board of State and Community Corrections, which requires Senate confirmation, was announced by the governor's office Friday. The board was created in 2011 when a prison realignment plan, responding to severe overcrowding, shifted to counties the responsibility for holding lower-level offenders.

Corpus has served as sheriff of San Mateo County since 2023. She served in several positions with the sheriff's office from 2002 to 2022, rising from a correctional officer to headquarters patrol captain, and was Millbrae's police chief from 2022 to 2023. Corpus holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and law enforcement administration from the Union Institute and University and a master's degree in law enforcement and public safety leadership from the University of San Diego.
