TOOELE, Utah ( ABC4 ) — An investigation is ongoing after police say a 4-year-old Utah child fired a loaded gun, striking their sibling.

The accidental shooting happened on Monday, June 24, in Stockton home, just six miles south of Tooele. According to information from a search warrant, the 4-year-old found the loaded gun in the basement.

“While the child was touching the firearm, it discharged, causing a projectile to pass through the ceiling of the basement, through the floor of the main level, and into a siblings’ foot on the main level of the home,” Tooele Police Det. Dan Lerdahl wrote in a request for a search warrant.

Lerdahl confirmed with ABC4.com that the sibling was taken to the hospital and discharged the same day.

Lerdahl had requested the search warrant to enter the Stockton home and collect any evidence to support a criminal investigation of reckless endangerment. That investigation is still active and ongoing.

No charges have been filed as of Tuesday, July 16.
