CLARK TWP. ‒ A 12-year-old boy was conscious and alert after being accidentally shot Tuesday afternoon near Township Road 154, Holmes County Sheriff Tim Zimmerly said in a prepared statement.

Deputies' initial investigation indicated the Stone Creek boy was apparently shot while transporting a rifle on a four-wheeler in a farm field. The gun fell off the ATV, hit the ground and fired.

The victim was shot with a .22-caliber rimfire bolt-action single-shot rifle. The round entered his chest and exited through his shoulder, causing a single wound.

The victim was transported to a nearby landing zone by East Holmes Fire & EMS and transferred to Akron Children’s Hospital by Metro Life Flight Helicopter. His condition was unknown on Wednesday morning.

The shooting was reported at around 4:43 p.m.
